Born in Lima, Peru, Maria Chávez is best known as an abstract turntablist, sound artist and DJ.
Aspects of chance and coincidence are recurring themes within her work and unite her sound sculptures and installations with her solo turntable performance practice. She is currently a research fellow in the Sound Practice Research Department at Goldsmiths, University of London. Chávez has given lectures at numerous institutions, collaborated with various international artists and performers and presented award-winning sound pieces. She has been granted several residencies and also been active as a curator. In 2017, Maria Chávez will be artist-in-residence at the CEC ArtsLink Backroom Residency in St. Petersburg, Russia and the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation in Captiva, Florida.www.mariachavez.org
